FreeMarket at Gombak Setia

Just got to know about this through a friend who is going to this Free Market as a Contributor all the way from another state. This is certainly a good concept. Anyone wishes to join?

Here is information gathered from the event Facebook page. One of the organisers, En Syed Azmi, explained the following in the Facebook:-

Inviting all of you! Preliminary announcement.

Freemarket team (picture here minus one of our hero, Fadly Daud) in a headmaster's room! Facepalm. We do good stuff as hard as we try to be less controversial extraordinaire. Good luck with that! We are cordially inviting you to...

Freemarket PPRT Gombak Setia (Behind LRT Taman Melati)
Date: Sunday, 15th March.
Time: 9am-11am. (Contributors to come at 8am to set up).
Venue: A court, PPRT Gombak Setia. GPS coordinate soon.

Freemarket is a concept of charity and volunteerism with zero cost. Everyone can participate and everyone can actually emulate and do it. How does it work?

As contributors, you can start by looking at things around your house that is still in good condition but no longer NEED. Clean and compile them up nicely. On the FreeMarket day, bring them over and set the things up as if its up for sale like any market (think pasar malam). Since its a free event, normally contributors will bring their own either mat, table or clothing racks if needed. Mat is better.

During your set up, our team members will explain what will happen when the market starts exactly at 9am. When customers starts coming in, they too have been briefed on how this works. They will see and can take anything that they NEED from your table with one condition. They have to ASK nicely for every item that they wish to take, and when you, the contributors say yes, pleasantries will be exchanged with "Thank you" followed by "You're welcome ". If customers take without asking, stop them and explain nicely that is called stealing. If customers takes too many to a point of illogical, you have the right to say no. The items are still own by the contributors and they have the right to decline to whoever customers.

In a nutshell, pleasantries are the currency of trade in that 2 hours.

The contributors have to stay with their items either untill all their items are taken or till 11am where items that are not taken will be taken back home by the seller. Hence this is why we emphasis things that is in good conditions only. This would solved the cleaning up process. Plastic bags are not encouraged.

Ps: clothing items is rather hard to finished. Most other items are quickly grabbed over. Some would finished as early as 17 minutes.

Besides items, services such as haircut are also welcome.

Some would volunteer their time like playing chess with visitors as part of their contribution.

Food are also welcome (cooked or raw).

One new services that you can do is to volunteer your time to bring people in. Let's say in your area you know someone less privileged, you can bring them over to our FreeMarket (be on time) and let them choose. Later, you can send them back. Think orphanage, old folks around your area, neighbours or even your office mates. Everything is free, take what you only need.

This time, I invited anybody to come and be contributors. I also invite as many NGI to open up and you can find out what they do to help others. Its free, no registration (except if you bring food) and just start looking at things.

PPRT are part of government housing project that mostly are low or tight middle income patrons. But we at Freemarket do not discriminate as we open to all in need and not poor only.

For corporates, this time its rather special. Have a shout out to all CSR managers to come and simply visit and observe us what we do. Come over at exactly 8:30am for just an hour. Just 1 hour to observe and see and I bet (InsyaAllah) you would love this free easy to do concept. Please share and tag them please. Its about caring and giving.

So now, there you have it. You yourself should come over if you like. More details coming up.
